Hordeolum (Stye)

A hordeolum or stye is a common eyelid condition that occurs when a very painful lump grows inside or on the surface of the eyelid and becomes infected. Hordeolums occur when the glands along the eyelid margin become clogged with dirt, dead skin, and oil and the tube of the gland becomes inflamed and infected. A hordeolum can be an external or internal eye lid lesion. The external hordeolum is a lot easier to manage. The internal hordeolum usually requires antibiotics both topically and orally. Patients that wear makeup, work outside or in a dusty, greasy environment are more likely to develop a hordeolum. A hordeolum can be detected during your routine yearly eye examination and can be treated accordingly
